Indulge in these sweet and aromatic apple squares, infused with the warmth of cinnamon and the subtle herbaceous note of thyme. Perfect for a cozy dessert or a delightful snack!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted Terp Butter, cubed

  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 4 cups peeled and diced apples (about 4-5 medium apples)

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Preparation

  1. Preheat and Prepare:

    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

    • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

  2. Make the Dough (5-7 minutes):

    • Mix flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.

    • Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

    • Stir in egg and milk until just combined. The dough will be sticky.

  3. Prepare the Apples (5 minutes):

    • Toss diced apples with cinnamon, thyme, and honey.

  4. Assemble (5 minutes):

    • Press half of the dough into the baking dish.

    • Spread apple mixture over the crust.

    • Crumble remaining dough over the apples, and sprinkle with brown sugar.

  5. Bake (35-40 minutes):

    • Bake in the oven until the top is golden brown and apples are tender.

  6. Cool and Serve:

    • Allow to cool in the pan before cutting into squares. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
